The 2009 Esquao Awards Gala, an initiative of the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW) have honoured the following recipients of the 2009 Esquao Award: Grace Auger of Calgary, Rosie Day Rider of Cardston, Myrtle Calahaisn, Bernadette Iahtail, Lise Robinson, Dolores Flett, and Debbie Houle of Edmonton; Hazel Derange, Lana Hill and Carla Saunders of Fort McMurray; Lorraine Cunningham and Pauline Ominayak of High Prairie; Brenda Bourque-Stratichuk of Lac La Biche; Jonelle Gladue & Deborah Lloyd of Medicine Hat; Susie Robinson of Sherwood Park Alvina Price of Slave Lake; Hazel McKennitt of St. Albert; and Shelly Hamelin of Valleyview. Over 650 people attended the 14th Annual event on May 16, 2009 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. Over 300 women have been honoured to date.
